There is a tradition, and a community, that is growing in westside Costa Mesa, CA. My good friends at Generic Youth open up their doors every hump day in order to host BURGER WEDNESDAY!

The crowd that assembles on this substantially slanted parking lot every week is an eclectic mix of people. However, the binding characteristics that you find amongst everyone are a love for burgers and conversation. And let me tell you… grill master Scott Andrews makes the best burger in Orange County.

As sad as it was to watch Duke win the NCAA tournament game last night over the #5 seed Butler, the announcers couldn’t keep from repeatedly saying “there were no losers here”. Overall, I would say that sums up all of March Madness. And if you ask me that’s pretty rad.

The infographic above shows some of the amazing numbers that occur during this quasi-national-holiday-month. But I am truly impressed with how the entire event is organized. From streaming live video, to bracketology, to stimulating small town economies, I would say March Madness is a truly spectacular event. Even if you got dominated in your office bracket or your alma mater got knocked out sooner than the championship game, you can’t deny the quality of athleticism and heart that is displayed on the court.

However, in an effort to not over-romanticize this basketball tournament, I’ll stop writing. But I will say that I look forward to next year.

This spring Krochet Kids international is connecting two very distinct worlds in an unprecedented way. Through the purchase of hats (and now laptop cases) handmade in Uganda, customers will not only know the Ugandan lady who made their hat, but they will be able to personally thank them. Each hat comes with an inside label signed by the woman who made it, and by recording a video, posting a picture, or simply writing a note you can thank the team in Uganda who made your favorite beanie

Leading up to the launch on April 14th there will be a number of videos released describing this campaign in more detail.

even the pirates are helping Haiti

It turns out that a spokesman from the Somali pirates has been quoted as saying that their group will be contributing to the aid of our Haitian brothers and sisters by giving of their looted goods.

”The humanitarian aid to Haiti can not be controlled by the United States and European countries; they have no moral authority to do so. They are the ones pirating mankind for many years.”

One of the things that has truly left an impression on me throughout this catastrophe in Haiti has been the global response to the crisis. This true-to-life Robin Hood scenario is yet another glimpse into the humanity that binds us all together.

I only wish I could be on the shores of Haiti when the aid workers see this motley crew coming into the port.

world record ollie

Sitting in the terminal at LAX before the holidays, getting ready to fly home for Christmas, I saw a strangely familiar face. This kid sat next to me to plug in his computer and it only took me a few seconds to realize where I knew him from. I had just watched a recap from the Tampa Am skate competition, where Luis Tolentino had tied the world record for the highest ollie at 44.5″ and there he was sitting next to me.

There is a very small percentage of people on this earth who can jump over 40″. Add a skateboard to the mix and that percentage becomes immeasurably small. In the couple minutes I got to talk to him I learned that he doesn’t really train at all to ollie that high. He just skates. No weights. No exercise regimen. Nada. And if his natural talent wasn’t enough to impress me, his humility definitely would.

He puts the ‘must’ in mustache

My good friend Ryan was visiting from Seattle last weekend, and when I first saw him from afar it seemed as though something was subtly different about him. As he got closer I realized that it wasn’t subtle at all and was, in fact, a bit audacious. Awesomely audacious.

I have grown a mustache a time or 2 in my life and have always enjoyed the experience. You get the funniest looks, the most random comments and high fives with a furry upper lip. Needless to say, seeing Ryan’s well-groomed ‘stache was nothing short of inspiring and encouraging to me. He is sacrificing his ability to ever be taken seriously for the celebration of masculinity.

10,000 glorious miles

My friend Travis has a 1977 Honda Passport scooter. On many measures and across many reviews this scooter is rated one of the most reliable around. Still, it blew my mind yesterday to learn that this simple machine has traveled 10,000 miles. It’s seen a lot of roadway at about 30-40 mph in its lifetime. Pretty awesome.

Here’s to (somewhat) modern mechanics!
