bad covers of good songs (#02)

Daft Punk had an amazing year. The release of their highly anticipated album had people buzzing all 2013, and it truly did not disappoint. An extremely successful award season — winning the coveted ‘Album of the Year’ — affirmed their place in music within 2013 and for the history books.

Their hit song Get Lucky also won record of the year, but that hasn’t stopped people from doing their best to ruin it… including the Russian Police. Here are a few of the favorite (least favorite?) bad covers of Get Lucky I found around the internet.

This is the second installment of ‘bad covers of good songs’, you can see the first one HERE.

beast mode

I can’t say that I am a huge fan of the NFL, but this Sunday is different. Having grown up in WA and lived in Seattle, Super Bowl XLVIII is the biggest game of my lifetime. My social feeds are overrun with news about the game and the story lines of the players that make it unique.

A few of my favorites are the above video, this interview with Marshawn Lynch (aka Beast Mode), and this Duracell commercial about the Seahawks deaf player.

macklemore and ryan lewis tour finale

I feel an overwhelming sense of pride when I watch this video. Not for myself, but for this duo, whose story I really only know a sliver of, but whose journey has been an inspiration to me and so many others.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are truly a testament to the nature of hard work and the pure pursuit of passion. They are artists. But they didn’t wait for someone to applaud their work, or to receive a stamp of approval (Hint: No great artists do). They didn’t need the validation of a record label. They created art for art’s sake. They poured out their all to whoever would listen. As Seth Godin says they picked themselves and people were mesmerized by it.

Like many great artists they inspire me to create, to be vulnerable, and always be improving. Get a window into their crazy past year in this Macklemore and Ryan Lewis tour finale video.

[My wife and I had the chance to see them perform during Grammy week in downtown LA. The hype is real. These guys are great performers.]

social media is lonely

How social is it really?

I try to tell myself that I am engaging with my friends in a real way. I like to believe that it’s good to stay connected on social media so I can know what’s happening with my friends and family. I try to will myself to be intentionally connected with way more than 150 people (and I fight to prove that statistic wrong).

But the truth of the matter is that social media is lonely. I rarely pick up the phone to call. I only choose the best photos to post… each one carefully curated and edited using multiple apps. I live a fairytale life on the internet, and I follow along with my friends who do the same by double-tapping their photos and occasionally commenting with some emojicon.

This video does an amazing job breaking down the challenges we face as a “social media driven” generation. But the question that follows is… what do we do about it? (Please leave a comment below if you have any ideas at all)

I don’t think the solution is to completely vilify all internet socializing, but we must be aware. A couple ideas:

  1. When you see a photo or post that really strikes you, call that person and let them know.
  2. Take a sabbatical from social media (a day, a week, or a month??)
  3. For a week, don’t post anything about yourself, but only share about others and what they mean to you.

Have a great weekend. And get outside.

{And yes, a reason for writing this post is to let this serve as a reminder for myself as well}
